The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) recently announced it is making the process easier for Veterans by eliminating the need for them to complete an annual Eligibility Verification Report (EVR).
The no-cost festive holiday-themed Meet and Greet featured over a dozen companies and offered veterans an opportunity to promote their business or provide assistance to veteran owned small businesses.
The top five states in terms of percentage of veteran owned vs. civilian owned businesses are South Carolina, West Virginia, Virginia, Tennessee and Alabama.
Current New Jersey law allows local governments to designate up to 3% of local contracts to small businesses, as well as those owned by women and minorities. The veteran set-aside bill opens that provision to businesses owned by or that employ veterans.
Nearly 2.3 million veterans work in federal, state and local posts. Nearly one in 10 veterans employed today works for a freight or transportation firm, almost double the rate of civilians. At U.S. rail companies, one in five employees is likely to be a veteran. According to Department of Labor statistics, more than 800,000 veterans have found work as maintenance and installation technicians, plumbers and electricians, telecommunications specialists, automotive repairmen and other craft workers. Department of Labor statistics also show that protective service jobs have grown by 35 percent over the last decade.
Although tax credits for hiring the disadvantaged expired in 2011 and those for hiring veterans expired at the end of 2012; both have been extended through 2013.
The Red Cross has also developed the Coming Home From Deployment: The New “Normal” booklet to assist all military families with what can be a difficult and complicated transition home.
